The ART of the MINI

with a Less Invasive Lift

A mini facelift is a less invasive version of a traditional facelift, designed to address mild to moderate signs of aging, particularly around the lower face and jawline. Here’s a breakdown of what it entails:

Procedure Overview

  • Focus Areas: The mini facelift primarily targets sagging skin and tissue around the lower cheeks, jawline, and sometimes the upper neck.
  • Incisions: The incisions are smaller and typically made around the ears. These are less extensive than those in a traditional facelift, leading to reduced scarring.
  • Tissue Adjustment: The underlying facial tissues (SMAS layer) are lifted and tightened. Excess skin may be removed to improve contour and smoothness.
  • Anesthesia: General anesthesia is most commonly used but in some cases a mini-facelift can be performed under local anesthetic sedation.

Benefits of a Mini Facelift

  • Quicker Recovery: Recovery time is generally shorter than a traditional facelift, often around 2-3 weeks.
  • Less Invasive: Smaller incisions and less tissue manipulation mean less swelling, bruising, and discomfort.
  • Natural Results: Provides a refreshed and youthful appearance without looking “overdone.”
  • Lower Cost: Typically less expensive than a full facelift.
  • For Younger Candidates: Ideal for individuals in their 40s–50s or those with early signs of aging.

Who is a Good Candidate?

The best candidates for a mini facelift are those with:

  • Mild sagging or jowls in the lower face.
  • Good skin elasticity.
  • A desire for subtle, natural-looking improvements.
  • Interest in a less invasive procedure with quicker recovery.

What to Expect After a Mini Facelift

Immediately After Surgery

Recovery from a mini facelift is generally smoother and involves less bruising and swelling compared to a full facelift. Patients can typically return home shortly after a brief recovery period. Dr. Digenis advises patients to stay active by walking periodically to promote circulation and support the healing process. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness are normal and may increase over the first couple of days before reaching their peak. To manage discomfort effectively, patients should take prescribed pain medication as directed, preferably before the pain becomes significant.

First Week After Surgery

Stitches will be removed 7 days after the procedure and then the second set of sutures will be removed 4-5 days after the first set. If you are still taking prescription pain medication, you should refrain from driving. Plan to take at least two weeks off from work and reduce your daily activities during this period. Avoid rigorous exercise for the first week, then gradually ease into light walking over the following 4-5 weeks.

Next Few Weeks After Surgery

It’s normal to experience some bruising and puffiness for several weeks, though most patients feel confident returning to social activities within 2 to 3 weeks. If you have a significant social or work-related event, such as a wedding or major conference, it’s recommended to schedule your surgery at least 3 months ahead to ensure optimal healing and results.
