A FULL and SHAPELY Smile

with a Lip Lift by Dr. Digenis

A Lip Lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the distance between the nose and the upper lip, enhancing the shape, definition, and youthful appearance of the lips. By lifting the upper lip, it exposes more of the pink lip (vermilion), creating a fuller look without the use of fillers. It also improves lip balance and can enhance the curvature of the Cupid’s bow. The procedure is often performed under local anesthesia with minimal downtime and long-lasting results.

Benefits of a Lip Lift

A Lip Lift enhances the natural shape and youthful position of the upper lip, especially if you feel it looks too long, thin, or lacks definition. As we age, the upper lip can elongate and droop, causing the mouth to appear flatter or less expressive. A lip lift shortens the space between the nose and lip, exposing more of the pink lip and creating a fuller, lifted, and more defined appearance—without fillers. This subtle change can dramatically improve facial harmony, rejuvenate the smile, and create a more vibrant, balanced look overall.

Some Common Misconceptions about Lip Lift

A lip lift can significantly enhance facial symmetry by creating a more balanced proportion between the upper lip, nose, and lower face. Here are a few misconceptions about lip lifts that we often hear.

“It’s the same as lip fillers.”

While both enhance the lips, a lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the space between the nose and upper lip, creating a natural lift—whereas fillers add volume by injecting substances like hyaluronic acid. A lip lift changes lip position and shape, not just fullness.

“It will make my lips look unnatural.”

When performed by an experienced surgeon, like Dr. Alex Digenis, a lip lift enhances the natural contours of the upper lip and smile, often looking more subtle and refined than overfilled lips. The goal is to restore youthful proportion, not exaggerate features.

“The results don’t last.”

Unlike fillers, which are more temporary, a lip lift provides long-lasting or permanent results, since it physically lifts and reshapes the lip tissue rather than temporarily adding volume.

“It leaves a large, visible scar.”

The incision is carefully placed at the corners of the mouth, often healing into a nearly invisible fine line. With proper technique and aftercare, scarring is minimal and easily concealed.

“It’s only for older patients.”

While lip lifts are popular for reversing age-related elongation of the upper lip, younger patients with genetically longer upper lips or minimal pink lip show also benefit from improved lip shape and balance.

Who is a candidate for a Lip Lift?

  • Ideal candidates have a long upper lip or minimal visible pink lip (vermilion), creating a thin or aged look.
  •  Lip lifts may benefit a wide array of age groups. It can be a younger person seeking more defined lip shape or an older patient aiming to restore youthful proportions.
  • Is in good overall health and a non-smoker, which supports proper healing.
  • Has realistic expectations and desires a natural-looking, long-lasting enhancement.

What to Expect after a Lip Lift

Immediately After

Right after the procedure, you can expect mild to moderate swelling, tightness, and some bruising around the upper lip.  Discomfort is usually minimal and easily managed with pain medication. There may be some numbness or tingling, and you’ll be advised to avoid excessive lip movement, talking, or smiling during this time.

First Week after Surgery

By the end of the first week, most of the swelling and bruising has begun to subside. Sutures (if not dissolvable) are typically removed about 1 week later. While some residual puffiness or firmness may remain, the area will already start to look more refined. Many patients feel comfortable returning to work or social activities at this point.

Next Few Weeks after Surgery

Swelling continues to decrease, and the incision—hidden at the corners of the mouth—begins to fade and flatten. Sensation gradually returns to the area, and normal facial movements become more comfortable. Final results, include a shorter upper lip and more defined lip shape, which becomes increasingly visible, offering a natural, rejuvenated look.
