Who’s a candidate for a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to reduce visible signs of aging in the face and neck. It involves tightening sagging skin, smoothing deep wrinkles, and restoring definition to the jawline and cheeks. By addressing areas like loose skin, facial fat, and weakened underlying tissues, a facelift creates a more youthful and refreshed appearance. The procedure is tailored to each patient’s unique needs, delivering natural-looking, long-lasting results.

The best candidates for a facelift typically meet the following criteria:

  • Visible Signs of Aging: Have sagging skin, deep wrinkles, or loss of facial contours in the lower face and neck.
  • Good Skin Elasticity: Retain some skin elasticity for better healing and natural-looking results.
  • Overall Good Health: Are in good physical health with no medical conditions that could impair healing.
  • Nonsmokers: Avoid smoking, as it can interfere with the healing process.
  • Realistic Expectations: Understand the procedure’s limitations and have clear, achievable goals.
  • Stable Weight: Maintain a stable weight, as significant weight fluctuations can affect results.
  • Emotional Readiness: Are mentally prepared and motivated to undergo surgery and the recovery process.

Customized Facelift Surgery

Dr. Digenis customizes a facelift by tailoring the procedure to the patient’s unique facial anatomy, aging concerns, and aesthetic goals. Here’s how customization is achieved:

  1. Comprehensive Evaluation: Dr. Digenis assesses skin quality, elasticity, and the extent of sagging or wrinkles, as well as underlying muscle and fat distribution.
  2. Patient Goals: Dr. Digenis discusses the patient’s specific concerns, such as jowls, loose neck skin, or deep nasolabial folds, and aligns the procedure with their desired outcomes.
  3. Procedure Type: Depending on the patient’s needs, Dr. Digenis selects the appropriate technique, such as a traditional facelift for significant sagging or a mini facelift for more subtle enhancement.
  4. Focus Areas: The procedure is tailored to target the specific areas of concern, such as the jawline, mid-face, or neck, while ensuring overall facial harmony.
  5. Combining Procedures: Dr. Digenis may combine the facelift with additional treatments, such as eyelid surgery, or injectables for a more comprehensive rejuvenation.
  6. Natural Results: The goal is to create a refreshed, youthful appearance without an overdone look, ensuring the results are balanced and proportional to the patient’s natural features.

By considering these factors and taking the time to get to know his patients, Dr. Digenis crafts a customized plan to meet the patient’s unique needs and achieve their aesthetic goals.

What to Expect after a Facelift

The exact timeline for recovery of a Facelift varies depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure. Following Dr. Digenis’ post-operative instructions is key to a smooth and efficient recovery.

Immediately After Surgery

You will spend 1 overnight stay at our Quad A Certified Surgery Center in a relaxed private room with a private nurse. You will have bandages around your head and neck during this stay and slightly elevated in bed. Pain medications will be prescribed to alleviate any discomfort. Discharge is typically early the next morning by 8AM.

First Week After Surgery

Most swelling, bruising, and discomfort occur during this time. Patients are advised to rest, avoid strenuous activity, and follow post-operative care instructions provided by Dr. Digenis and his surgical team. You will return for the removal of your first set of sutures.

The Next Few Weeks After Surgery

Most patients can resume normal activities, including light walking. Your second set of sutures will be removed. Swelling continues to diminish. You will have a faint line where the sutures were that will continue to diminish. Dr. Digenis advises keeping out of  direct sunlight and wearing broad brimmed hats. You should keep any exercise to light activity until instructed otherwise. You will continue to see Dr. Digenis for periodic followups.

The results vary depending on factors like age, skin type, lifestyle, and the surgical technique used. On average, results can last 7–10 years. However, natural aging continues, so maintaining results may involve good skincare, a healthy lifestyle, and potentially follow-up treatments.

Ideal candidates are:

  • In good overall health.
  • Non-smokers (or willing to quit before and after surgery).
  • Concerned with sagging skin or deep wrinkles that non-surgical treatments haven’t addressed.
  • Realistic about their expectations for results.

What is the recovery process like after a facelift?

Day 1-2: Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common. Bandages and drainage tubes may be applied.

Week 1-2: Stitches are typically removed, and swelling starts to subside. Patients can usually return to light activities.

Week 3-4: Most swelling and bruising resolve, allowing for a return to work or social life.

After 1-2 months: Final results are visible, though minor swelling may persist.

A lot depends on what kind of work you do. Generally speaking, after the second week, you can be in front of people as your stitches will have been removed. If your work involves strenuous activity Dr. Digenis recommends you return after 3-4 weeks.

You can walk at 6 days post operation. Keep your heart rate below 100 bpm. Two weeks after surgery you can sweat and begin to increase your activity. Dr. Digenis recommends avoiding the pool, ocean, hot tubs, or saunas for 4-6 weeks after surgery.

After all incisions have healed and Dr. Digenis permits you to. Typically, on average, that’s about 2 weeks post operation. You will still need to be cautious in applying anything that might irritate the skin or slow down the healing process.

Typically, if you are healing well, travel is permitted after 2 full weeks after your facelift.

So much depends on the genetics, lifestyle, weight gain or loss, environment, etc. Dr. Digenis has performed facelifts on everyone from their mid 40’s to their late 70’s.
