Your Initial Consultation
Inverted T: This pattern is the most common used for this procedure and is often the best choice for women with overly generous breasts. Dr Digenis makes incisions around the areolar borders, followed by vertical incisions on the underside of each breast. He creates a third horizontal incision near the crease where the breasts attach to the chest. During your consultation, Dr. Digenis will recommend one of these two patterns and explain why he feels it is the best choice for your case.

What to Expect from Recovery from Breast Reduction
Women who undergo breast reduction are often among the most satisfied cosmetic surgery patients, enjoying more clothing options, physical activities, and increased confidence. Most take a week off work for recovery, with support from friends or family for daily tasks. Dr. Digenis will give detailed recovery instructions and prescribe pain relief as needed. Recovery varies, but here are some general guidelines…
Immediately After Surgery
After returning home, follow Dr. Digenis’ Post-Operative Instructions for drain care (if you have them). Gentle walking promotes circulation and aids healing. Nausea is common after anesthesia, so start with light foods and gradually move to solids.
First Week After Surgery
Every surgical patient returns to our office for Dr. Digenis to remove sutures, bandages, and any drains. Prescription pain medication is usually only needed for a few more days. Light activity is fine in the first week but avoid heavy lifting for approximately 4 weeks.
A Few Weeks After Surgery
Refrain from vigorous exercise for the first four weeks. Bruising and tenderness will gradually subside. You may also experience numbness or tingling, which usually decreases over time. Scars will become less noticeable but may take a year or more to blend into your skin.
Breast Reduction FAQ
Click a question below to see the answer for some of the most common questions we receive from potential clients.
All surgeries have risks. However, breast reduction is typically safe when performed by a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Alexander Digenis. Common breast reduction complications include visible scarring, infection, and loss of nipple sensation. The scar will be red at first but will fade dramatically over the next year.
Dr. Digenis will use anesthesia during your breast reduction, but some soreness is expected for the first two to three days afterward. We’ll provide prescription pain medication and may recommend using ice packs on sore areas to reduce inflammation and discomfort.
Dr. Digenis does not accept insurance in his practice. We do offer competitive medical financing plans through CareCredit, however.
Weight loss before or after breast reduction surgery can affect your results. This factor should be discussed with Dr. Digenis prior to scheduling your procedure.
Dr. Digenis will provide you with a surgical bra for two weeks after surgery. At your follow-up visit, we will let you know if you should continue wearing this bra or if you can wear a similar support garment like a sports bra. We will also inform you when it is appropriate to wear a traditional bra. Please avoid underwire bras for at least 3-6 weeks after having breast reduction surgery.
Breast size and shape can change during and after pregnancy, so it’s important to discuss future pregnancy plans with your surgeon before breast reduction surgery. If you intend to become pregnant and breastfeed, be aware that breast reduction surgery may impact your ability to nurse, especially if a significant amount of breast tissue is removed or if the milk ducts are affected. These are important topics to discuss during your consultation.
