Recovery from Breast Augmentation - What to Expect

Your breast augmentation recovery will depend on factors such as age, breast size, skin elasticity, physical health, and hormone levels. Here’s a quick overview of a typical recovery timeline…

Day of Surgery

After Dr. Digenis completes your surgery in our state-of-the-art, Quad A certified surgical center, you’ll wake up in the recovery room, where our surgical team will closely monitor you. A friend or family member can be with you during this time. Once home, rest with your back elevated at a 30-degree angle to help minimize swelling. Using a pillow wedge or sleeping in a recliner can make this easier. We also encourage gentle movement on the day of surgery to promote healthy circulation.

Day After Surgery

We suggest having a friend or family member stay with you on the first night, as you may feel a bit groggy following the surgery. You will wear a compression bra to support your breast implants and incisions. It’s normal for your chest to feel tight, but pain medications are provided to keep you comfortable. You may shower 24 hours after surgery, but avoid baths or submerging your breasts in water for four weeks.

First Week After Surgery

  • During bandage changes, you may notice your breasts sitting higher and appearing smaller than expected. This is normal, as the implants will settle into their permanent position over time.
  • Continue to wear your compression bra or fitted camisole for support.
  • It’s common for your breasts to feel firm and occasionally have slight twinges.
  • Avoid driving while you are taking pain medications.
  • Keep contact information for your healthcare provider nearby in case of any concerns or complications.
  • Recovery varies, but most patients are ready to return to work about 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.

Next Six Weeks After Surgery

  • For women who work out regularly, it’s important to gradually ease back into your fitness routine.
  • Begin with light activity, such as gentle walking, which can usually be resumed after three weeks.
  • Be sure to wear a supportive sports bra with NO underwire during any exercise.
  • Wait at least four weeks before returning to your full workout regimen.
  • Follow Dr. Digenis’ post-surgical instructions closely to ensure optimal results and a smooth recovery.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

Click a question below to see the answer for some of the most common questions we receive from potential clients.

Breast augmentation surgery can benefit patients who want to enhance breast size and shape, improve breast projection, boost self-confidence and body self-esteem, and look great in the latest fashions. The good news is a breast augmentation procedure can resolve these issues to enhance a woman’s curves and add volume to the bust.

Breast augmentation surgery uses implants to enhance breast size. Dr. Digenis offers different implant types to match each patient’s unique goals. Implants are generally classified as saline or silicone, but there are additional differences between them. in general, breast implant options address size, shape, profile, and core.

Dr. Digenis typically places the implant behind the pectoral muscle. This type of breast augmentation places the upper part of the implant behind the pectoral muscle with the lower part of the implant behind the breast tissue. This technique creates a more natural shape while allowing for more soft tissue coverage, minimizing rippling or visible edges.

If you experience drooping or sagging, you might consider combining a breast lift with your augmentation. This added procedure can help create a more youthful, lifted shape. Many women over 40 find a breast lift beneficial. A simple way to assess if a lift may be needed is to check if your nipples sit below your natural breast crease.

Your new implants may obscure some areas of your breast tissue, potentially making cancer screenings more challenging. Additionally, mammogram technicians need to use specific techniques for women with implants, so it’s important to inform them about your breast augmentation.

While breast augmentation is generally safe and effective, it does come with potential risks, including:

Capsular contracture: Scar tissue around the implant can harden, making the breast feel firm or altering its shape. Revision surgery may be needed to remove scar tissue or replace the implant.

Loss of nipple sensation: This is usually temporary, but permanent nerve damage is possible.

Asymmetry: One breast may appear larger than the other after surgery.

Rupture: An implant can rupture, deflate, or leak due to trauma or a defect.

Position shift: Over time, implants may shift, ripple, or change shape, which may require revision surgery.

Each of these potential complications might require further surgery to correct or adjust the implants.

A breast augmentation cost depends on many factors, including breast type, body type, the severity of cosmetic issues, incision type, implant type, and more. To get an accurate breast augmentation cost analysis, contact Dr. Alexander Digenis for a breast augmentation consultation.
